Southern Lombok
Note: In mid to late season it can be impossible to go this way as wind and swell make it too dangerous - it is at the Captain's discretion as to the best and safest route.
1. Desert Point
As with many waves in Indo the tides plays a big role at Deserts. At high tide it can appear 2-3' and quite fat....then as the tide goes out it begins to fire often turning into 5-6' left hand pits. The reef is quite shallow and booties are a must. The rip is very strong here and it can hold up to a 10ft swell. A serious wave...but serious fun once you get it wired.
2. Belongas Bay
A long bay with lots of potential. Mainly best in the early seaon before the winds become too strong. Several rights and left setup depending on the size and direction of the swell.
3. Selong Belanak also known as Mawi
It is one of the most beautiful and enchanting bay of Indonesia. Really a dream land!!! Since it is isolated, pay attention not to hurt yourself: waves can be very powerful, with long hold downs. Once I saw a tiger shark in the water, but fishermen say it is exceptional. Mawi needs at least 3 foot of ocean swell to work. Some swells will offer a left and right hand peak and can probably handle up to 6'. This break is not so tide dependant but can get very very sucky at low tide. It is a beautifully scenic spot and worth a walk on the beach. Keep and eye out for moneys on the headland.
4. Kuta Beach
Kuta is about the only place along the south coast offering accommodation and restaurants - a good spot to stop for a bit of party action! The bay offers a left reef break that is best at 4-6' but sometimes to be a bit sectiony. There is a right there also but it is inconsistent although there are stories that in the right swell and wind conditions it can be epic.
5. Seger Beach
Located just 2 km from Kuta, a reef break, right hander sometime left-hander. This break works when swell drop, classic wave and can hold up to 6 foot with the right wind, it can get hollow and barrelling, best at in coming or out going tide.
6. Grupuk Bay (Gerupuk Bay)
This huge bay just about 7 km east Kuta and in a big days it’s offer few different breaks around the bay, reef breaks and to get to the breaks a boat is needed. Inside Gerupuk or Bumbang Bay, right-hander, flat reef or sand bottom which is suitable for all level and fun waves. The big days of Southwest swell can be great day to surf it. This break is almost surf-able at any seasons even sometime need to get right tide, in coming tide it is best time. A nice bay setup with a left one side and right the other and a peak in the middle. On bigger swells the bommie is also rideable. The right hand point is probably the pick with long bowling waves. Watch the bommie for indications of the sets....don't get caught inside otherwise it is a long long paddle!
7. Ampang
8. Ekas (Inside and Outside)
Is located on the east side of Kuta, a reef break, it has two spots; Outside and Inside Ekas.
Outside Ekas, left-hander, one a heavy wave when it’s big and it can be inconsistent, maximum it’s get 10 foot, mid to high tide.
Inside Ekas, it’s a fun peaky wave, just about 5 minutes by boat from outside. Left and right hander works when bigger swell, with left-hander from mid to high tide and right-hander from mid to low tide, hallow and barrelling at inside section. Maximum 8 foot, need to be South-east wind trade, with strong wind at some days the rip can be so strong and hardly get to the point. Another nice bay setup which requires a fair bit of sell to turn on.
It can handle any wind trade as it’s protected and surrounded by hills. Maximum it can get 8 foot. Gerupuk Outside or Gili Golong, right-hander, good at mid to high tide, better take your booties if it sallow. A huge wave and big take off at the point then long ride when you get to inside section which can be a fast and hollow section. Maximum it can get 10 foot, from October to April. Don-Don, it sets on the way to Gerupuk Inside, peak left and right hander. All surfers level, at any season or at least not too much wind, this break can be great fun, need to have a bigger swell. Any tide, out going tide would be best time. Pelawangan or Kid’s Point, another right-hander for beginners, only in a big days and it can be very hollow at out going or in coming tide.
9. Sereweh
10. Labuhan Haji
Shipwrecks
A right hand reef break that can barrel & pitch you, runs into a deeper channel.
Lacerations
A left & right reef break apptly named as lacerations are the go if you hang on too long.
Playgrounds
A left hand fun wave & a right hand little barrel over gentle reef wave size increases as the tide comes in.
Kiddies corner
This is a tiny wave specially for the beginner & after a hangover.
Penida Island Pt.
This area is for the experienced surfer as the tide can alter things quickly & a lost board can mean a heavy swim with high tide currents running in over very shallow reef (sharp reef) inbetween penida & lembongan & once in there is only one way out.
Roti Island
Good reef waves & a bommie as in our pics with Peppie riding it, a lovely easy fun wave, but the left hand reef brake opposite is fast & hollow.
Sumba surf breaks
Codi, Blonde Merosi, Millers right, Gods left, Sunsets left, Launching pad, Manggudu island has a left & right hand wave. Malaria exists here & wind plays a large roll so early mornings are the best.
